CADSORB CA75 INSTALLATION AND OPERATING PROCEDURES
GENERAL DESCRIPTION The CADSORB CA75 Adsorber is a unique concept for air pollution control. The CADSORB CA75 units are modular, discardable, prefabricated canisters containing special vapour phase granular activated carbon and all the essential components of a full-scale adsorption system. The CADSORB CA75 Adsorber has been developed to provide a simple, economical method for controlling odorous and toxic vapours emanating from storage tanks, reactor vessels and other sources where small amounts of obnoxious or toxic gases are vented into the atmosphere. It uses the enormous adsorption capacity of granular activated carbon to remove organic contaminants from the air. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Adsorber units are shipped ready to install. The CADSORB CA75 canister is self supporting and should be placed on a level accessible area as near as possible to the emission source in most cases,' all that is required for installation is a flexible hose or pipe connecting the vent to the 100mm inlet. A 100mm coupling is fitted in the canister cover, thus allowing easy installation of an outlet vent. The Absorbers can operate either from a continuous suction across the vent produced by a blower or by using the positive pressure inside the tank or process vessel. In most cases, the pressure within the tank or reactor is sufficient to overcome the pressure drop across the CA75 Adsorber, thus eliminating the need for a blower. The unit can also be supplied with a blower fitted. The pressure drop across the activated carbon will depend on vapour composition and flow rate. The canisters are intended to operate with a minimal back pressure. SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS Prior to starting up the system, it is necessary that the carbon be thoroughly wetted with water. The initial heat of adsorption that occurs when some vapours first contact activated carbon may cause elevated temperatures in the carbon bed. Thoroughly wetting the carbon with water prior to placing it into service will minimise this. This is easily accomplished by using about 15L of water spread evenly over the activated carbon, then draining the water from the unit. This operation is done at Camtek's factory. A residual volume of water will remain on the carbon after the canister is drained and this will act as a heat sink sufficient to minimise heat build up. It will not, however, impair the carbon's ability to remove organic vapours. Some chemical compounds in contact with activated carbon may, under certain circumstances, oxidise, decompose or polymerise. For this reason, CA75 Adsorbers should not be used on organic streams which have peroxide-forming tendencies, such as methyl-ethyl-ketone. Caution is recommended in contacting activated carbon with agents, such as chlorine. Use with liquid oxygen and ozone is discouraged. If the reaction of activated carbon is not known, appropriate tests should be performed before putting the filter into service. The unit should not be used with vented vapours, which are not compatible with the material lining of the canister. Our personnel will assist in this matter. In the case of flammable materials or potentially reactive materials, suitable flame arresters should be installed to isolate the CA 75 Adsorber. MAINTENANCE The CA 75 Adsorbor unit, having no moving parts, is essentially maintenance free. It is recommended that a suitable drain valve be fitted at the drain connection of the unit to be opened occasionally to drain off any excess water or condensed organic material, if necessary. Alternatively, a loop seal can be fitted. ACTIVATED CARBON The CA75 Adsorber contains around 70kg of special vapour phase granular
activated carbon. When removing SIZE 200 ltr Canister. 600 mm dia x 900 mm high. Connections Inlet 100 mm I.D. 114 mm O.D. Outlet 100 mm I.D. 114 mm O.D. Drain 20mm BSP F (Plugged)
